Hello Jonathan
I don't have the 1861 census but in 1851 I found the following

Dorothy

1851 census --Upper Beau St/Beresford St/Prince Edwin St/Garden Terrace area

Thomas Clayson 44 Hmc Officer b Northampton
Elizabeth Clayson 9 b Liverpool

So, was Thomas married twice?

There is an Elizabeth Ann Clayson bapt 30 Aug St Peters dau of Thomas and Ann??

There is a marriage of a Thomas Clayson and Ann Jones 8 Jun 1867 St Michaels Toxteth.???
Was Marys mother Elizabeth Jones???

Hi Dorothy, firstly many thanks for your help.

This is indeed the right Thomas CLAYSON. I suspected he'd married more than once because of his age at Mary's birth

I have Mary's birth cert. The mother is indeed Elizabeth Clayson nee JONES. Are you implying she could be Ann's sister?

I have looked for Thomas and Elizabeth's marriage entry on freeBMD and IGI with no joy. I guess I could order Thomas and Ann's cert. (and if they were sister's this would give me the same info and if not I'd get Thomas' father)

Many thanks

Hello again,
I am sorry, but Thomas and Ann's mariage should be 1837--not 1867!!
I don't think Civil Registration started until July 1837? So, you would have to get a copy of the Parish Register,
IF Elizabeth was Ann's sister,I think it was not allowed within the Church--or law-- to marry your wife's sister?? (Please check though)
It did happen sometimes---the couple went to a church where they were not known---or simply lived together.
Have you tried 1837online to look for their marriage? That site is supposed to have all entries?

Just for your records!!
From Gores Directory

1843 Thomas Clayson Spring Vale 10 Beau St

1860 Thomas Clayson 37(could be 87?) Queen St Edge Hill (This might help you find them in 1861?)

1881 census
Thomas is a Boarder living in Knowsley

Thomas Clayson d age 83 Jun quarter 1882 Prescot

Thanks again Dorothy. Now I know Thomas remarried (and potentially after the 1851 Census date and before Mary's birth) it'll help narrow the search for the marriage entry at the FRC.

Can I be cheeky and ask you to look at my other 1861 request (Haydock Lane, Haydock) for 1851???

Cheers
