There appear to be two HOFFMAN families in Manchetser in 1851 - neither in Ashley Lane.

Thank you for all the time and trouble you have spent looking for me but these are not my Hoffman family. I will keep it just in case one day they fall into my elusive Hoffman's somewhere.

Try giving a bit more info if you can - with just a surname one small transcription error means you can't find them. So if you have forenames, ages, etc that could well help.

I'm looking for
Conrad Hoffman born 1811 Germany Musician
son Francis 5, born Shropshire and son Balthasar age about 3 born Liverpool.
Conrad re-married in 1849 to Anna Catherina Keal, address on his marriage certificate was 23 Ashley Lane Manchester. So Anna should be with him she was born about 1820.
Thank you

There is a death registered for Anna Catherine HOFFMAN in June quarter 1851, so she may or may not have made the census. She must have died so close to the census, that her death certificate could give a better address than the marriage certificate.
There is a death registered for Baldaser HOFFMAN in Dec 1852 in Manchester. Assuming he is Balthazar you would expect the family to be around in 1851 - I'm still looking.

Hi
I have just been sent Conrad from the 1851 census disk,
Conrad age 30 his wife Catherine (not Anna) Francis wrong age but 11 and Balthasar age 3 living at Charter St Cellars Manchester which I believe isn't far from Ashley Lane.
I have Balthasar's death certificate and it is the son of Conrad.
The Anna Catherine Hoffman who died in 1851 I have penciled in but until I get the certificate I'm not to sure but Conrad was a widow in 1861, so it looks like it would be her death. Conrad, he died 1868.
Thank you so very, very much for all your time and effort you have put into looking for them.
Regards
Ann

Hi Ann.
I thought you might like to see pictures of Charter Street.
You can view them on www.images.manchester.gov.uk.

Hi Marj
Thank you for the web site of the Charter St houses.
What conditions they lived in and my Hoffman's were in the cellar but I don't think it could have been and worse conditions than living in that dorm. in one of the photos.
I would say Conrad wasn't a very good musician, wouldn't you.
Very intresting thanks again.
Regards
Ann
