Understand Lancs 1871 just went online at Ancestry and is fully searchable.

Would therefore appreciate a lookup for John CUNLIFFE, born c. 1839-1840, Rochdale.

If he's found, it will be the first knowledge I have of him prior to 1873 as his birth record and his marriage record have yet to be located, and , as I don't know where he lived for the 1841-1861 censuses, I can't really ask for lookups.

In 1873, to the mid-1880s he was an innkeeper; in 1891 a club steward; in 1901 a joiner.

Thanks for any help. Jojo

Hi Jojo, nearest one i can find is a bit dodgy, you`ll see why. I`ll write it exactly as it is transcribed
3 High Street,Wardleworth,Rochdale
Jane Cunliffe 35 Unmarried Housekeeper b.Rochdale
John Cunliffe 32 Son ! Coach proprietor b.Rochdale
William R Cunliffe nephew 7 b.Rochdale
Maybe the enumerator was a bit deaf, but Janes age is definitely 35 on the census.

Hi, Gram: Thanks very much. The entry is indeed puzzling. (Similar to the 1891, when he was widowed and working as a club steward, and his daughter was listed as his wife!-maybe it was the same enumerator-ha ha.)

As a coach proprietor, maybe his route encompassed the Flying Horse in Castleton and that's how he met his future wife who was the innkeeper there.

I'll see if I can work backwards from here. Thanks again. Jojo

Hi, again, Gram: I posted the 1871 address on another list and asked for a check in 1861. Another kind person found the family on both the 1861 and the 1851 at that address.

Jane was John's sister. There were three other siblings (James, William, and Marjory???) The mother was a widow on both censuses, unfortunately. Her name is hard to read, but I believe it could be Harriet, which would make the BRV2 entry I have the right one. The husband would then be William CUNLIFFE. John did name one of his daughters, Harriet Isabel (Isabel was his wife's mother's name).

The younger William on the 1871 must have been orphaned as I found him on the 1881 still as a nephew, but living with a couple name HOWARTH in Castleton. I can't see how the head James fits in with the Cunliffes as an uncle unless he first married a sister of one of the parents.

Anyway, as I said on the other list, I've never had a brick wall fall so fast. Thanks again for the original lookup. Jojo
