Hi
I am trying to trace Eliza Alcock (and her parents/siblings) who I believe was born in Mansfield about 1845. She was the daughter of Thomas Alcock (a lace manufacturer) whose wife was called Elizabeth? Eliza married William Ferriday Evans in 1868 in Liverpool and the marriage certificate shows witnesses Joseph Alcock and Lucy Alcock who must have been related to Eliza.
I don't know where the Alcock's lived in 1851 but as Eliza was born in Mansfield its the first place to start. Can anyone find the family in the census of 1851?

Hello Gerry,
Your family were in Claines, WOR for 1851.
Residing at Love's Grove, Claines:
Thomas ALCOCK, head, ?, lace machine maker, born Longbenton, GLS
Elizabeth ALCOCK, wife, 38, lace mender. born NTT
Joseph ALCOCK, son, ?, scholar, born Mansfield
Harriet ALCOCK, dau, ?, scholar, born Mansfield
Eliza ALCOCK, dau, 4?, scholar, born Mansfield
Lucy ALCOCK, dau, 9?, scholar, born Mansfield
Susan WESTLAKE, servant, 7?, born Twerton Devonshire?
The ages are almost impossible to read (very heavily lined through). Eliza has been squeezed in between Harriet and Lucy as an afterthought. I'm not entirely certain of the birthplace or age of Susan, the servant. She seems a bit young to be a servant, even for that day and age.

Hi Margaret
Many thanks, you have found the Alcock family, pity the writing is difficult. Thomas was born in Longbenton (think that's in Northumberland) but I don't know when and I wonder what GLS means? Likewise, against Elizabeth she is born NTT - Nottingham?. So far I've had no luck tracing them on the LDS site so a look at 1861 might show something. Do you have access to 1861, if not I will prepare a fresh posting.

Sorry Gerry, I was trying to save myself some keystrokes! GLS is Glouchestershire, NTT is Nottinghamshire. Elizabeth was described as being born in Nottinghamshire, no town given if I read it correctly.
I have tried to find your lot in the 1861. Oddly, I can find an older Thomas ALCOCK, also born Longbenton, but not YOUR Thomas. I'm still looking.
The other Thomas is married to a Mary, with daughter Emma and son Richard. This ALCOCK family is also living in Claines, and this Thomas is also in the lace manufacturing business, employing one man and five boys.
Your Thomas ALCOCK family reappear in the 1871 census. Let me know if you would like details for either of these ALCOCK families.

Hi Margaret
I can now see Thomas was born in Longbenton Glos (not Longbenton Northumberland) and Elizabeth in the county of Nottinghamshire. Would appreciate the 1871 census details for all the Alcock's you found which might just help me to piece something together.
I have 1871 for Eliza Evans (nee Alcock), also 1881-1901. By 1881 her sister Lucy Alcock is living with the Evans family in Liverpool.
Much appreciate your help Margaret.

Hello Gerry
I have taken a very close look at the 1851 census for Thomas' birthplace. Definitely Gloucestershire Definitely "Long". Not entirely certain about that last bit!
Here's the information for the OTHER Thomas Alcock in 1851:
Residing on Chesnut Walk, Claines in 1851:
Thomas ALCOCK, head, 45, lace manufacturer, born "Sersencote", NTT.
Mary ALCOCK, wife, 46, born NTT
Thomas ALCOCK, son, 20, lace maker, born WOR
Emma ALCOCK, dau, 18, dress maker, born WOR
John ALCOCK, son, 15, scholar, born NTT
Jane ALCOCK, dau, 13, scholar, born WOR
Richard ALCOCK, son, 10, scholar, born NTT
The above are the same family of 1861, still have not found your Thomas ALCOCK.
Still at Lansdown Lane in 1871:
Richard ALCOCK, head, unm, 29, lace manufacturer, born Mansfield, NTT
Catherine A. DANIEL, niece, 16, born St. Georges, WOR
Elizabeth GRIFFITHS, servant, 21, born Claines, WOR
This is making me dizzy! Time to stop and clear my head for a bit.

Here is Joseph ALCOCK in 1861:
Residing at 36, Lime Kiln Lane, Liverpool:
Joseph ALCOCK, head, 24, grocer & tea dealer, born Nottingham
Elizabeth ALCOCK, wife, 20, born Liverpool
Harriet ALCOCK, dau, 1, born Liverpool
Elizabeth WILLIAMS, servant, 14, born Liverpool
Living at 24 (or 34?), Limekiln Lane [shop], Liverpool, in 1871:
Joseph ALCOCK, head, 34, grocer, born NTT
Elizabeth ALCOCK, wife, 30, born Liverpool
Harriet ALCOCK, dau, 11, born Liverpool
Elizabeth ALCOCK, dau, 9, born Liverpool
Thomas ALCOCK, son, 7, born Liverpool
Mary ALCOCK, dau, 5, born Liverpool
Lucy ALCOCK, dau, 3, born Liverpool
Joseph ALCOCK, son, 1, born Liverpool
Lucy ALCOCK, sister, unm, 28, born Mansfield, NTT
Elizabeth JOHNSON, servant, 21, born Liverpool
Joseph is (still?) at 24, Limekiln Lane in 1881, but this time he's got mother Elizabeth ALCOCK, born 1815 in Nottinghamshire living with him, and an additonal daughter, Agnes, born 1872 in Liverpool. Sister Lucy has moved to live with Eliza, and servant Elizabeth has disappeared.
Still no sign of Thomas, Elizabeth, Harriet, Eliza, or Lucy in 1861.

Hi Margaret
Finding two Thomas Alcock's both involved in the lace industry, possibly born in the same place has set me thinking  In your earlier reply you said my Thomas Alcock appears in 1871 and if so could you let me have the details, please. I'm sorry to trouble you for yet more information Margaret, you are so very very helpful and I do appreciate what you have found.
