I was hoping someone out there can help,
toaday I went on to Rootsweb and searched under surname lists and came across an entry for William ROLES (a name I am searching for)

all it stated was

Location Event Heworth DUR ENG
Date 1854
Directory SLATERS
Page 51

can anyone tell me what this means and maybe why he was in it.

Slaters - like Kelly's - was a publishing form which printed trades and other directories of towns and counties. So, an entry in Slater's 1854 Directory meant that Mr. Roles was either a resident of a particular address or a tradesman carrying on a particular trade in the area covered. For example, I had an ancestor who was listed as a tailor an draper in Slater's Directory for 1928 for Manchester.

If you email the person who posted the item, they may be able to let you know what the entry was.

Cheers,

Mike
