I'm just making a start on trying to trace my family history and so I'm very, very new to this.
I've had some success looking on the 1901 census and have followed that up by looking at the 1881 census. In some places on the latter I've found the people I'm looking for, in others I've hit a blank.
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for finding a Ralph and Eliza Brassington on the 1881 census (or any other information about them).
I have them on the 1901 census as living at 19 Bolholt Terrace in Bury (ecclesiastical parish Tottington St. Annes). At that time, Ralph is 61 and a farmer, he was born at Elkstone in Staffordshire, Eliza is 55 and was born at Ashover in Derbyshire. They have two of their children living at home, Barbara aged 25 and born in Elkstone and William aged 20 and born in Blackley.
I have William's birth certificate which shows he was born at Blackley Reformatory on 6th October 1881 as at that time, Ralph is working as the Labour Master at the Reformatory. The birth certificate also gives Eliza's middle name as Jane.
Eliza (nee Calladine) and Ralph married in Stockport Parish Church on 3rd December 1872, at this time Ralph was a widower and living in Elkstone, whilst Eliza was living in Werneth, Stockport. Ralph's father was also named Ralph, whilst Eliza's father was Samuel Calladine.

Hi,

Have you seen all the Brassingtons on the IGI for Elkstone? Ralph is there together with others who might be siblings. He was christened 15 March 1840. His mother's name was Ann.

I used Hugh Wallis' site

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/

and went to the two files for Elkstone - C034031 and C034032.

Ralph also shows up on the FamilySearch site.

Hope this helps.

Hi again,

Eliza's christening is also on the site - C3207126. It was 16 August 1846. Her parents were Samuel and Sarah.

Thanks ever so much, I obviously need to learn where all the useful websites are. I've just been looking on the site you gave the link to and have just managed to find the christening of one of my Haydocks as well :)
